 1996 Suzuki Savage LS650

Build started spring of 2008.
Rode in Sturgis August, 2009.
Kinda finished summer 2011
Total invested = $950
Will try to post these in chronological order.....

So, when we first got together, my wife had this bike sitting in the back yard with no engine in it. By the time i got around to asking about it, it had sat for over 10 years. The motor had been ran out of oil and seized up on the road, laying it out and almost totaling said bike. She traded a knife for what was left, hoping to rebuild it herself someday.
Since i rode, i knew i would have to get her a working motorcycle. A couple years later we bought her one and i was now free to rip into it like a christmas present. Which i did.
The motor was in a large plastic tote, what there was of it, and sure enough the piston rings had galled the walls pretty bad, also the cam had eaten it's journals, etc. etc.. So between ebay and craigslist.....well. I bought enough to rebuild it

While the engine slowly got assembled, i nabbed some cool parts to make things more interesting.

Harley risers are not a direct bolt on deal. So had to improvise a little. Suzuki sleeves and Harley rubber spacers/ chrome washers, torqued down insanely tight...hahha

Hardtail? Crazy?          Yes i am.          Bought some aluminum bar stock, but i really don't have the equipment to shape it the way i would like. Maybe later.

Tried different cuts, but rear fender still looked like ^#$@%. Patiently waited for a replacement of some kind.

Got the tank pretty cheap 'cause of the dent. But some wire wheel and assorted sandpaper helped.

From what i read, any more than 1/4inch or so thick and the bondo can cook itself into a brittle mess. 2 years and not a single crack or sign of trouble......Yeah i know....(knock on wood)

So, with the engine untested but lookin' good, in it goes. Test fitting the LaPera seat. Any parts you want info on, just let me know . I gots a list...lol
Also rebuilt the carb, which has a 42mm cone filter. figured between that and a straight pipe, i'd better rejet. So a stage 2 kit was installed.

Hardtail struts from a guy on ebay. Made to fit a Honda Shadow. Holes are a little big, needs to be shimmed a few thousanths....
A tube of dielectric grease and cleaned every connector, some creative rewiring..
Front turn signal mount nuts pounded/quick steeled into brackets.
Rode to Highway Patrol office to have inspected. Whew, passed.

Muffler, Harley fishtail. Aluminum spikes replace passenger footpegs. Also a couple come out of the frame rails under the seat, just for the hell of it.

Stored for winter soon after this and, of course, something happened. The front brake quit working!
Not a surprise, so i bought another and kept movin'.

Found a billet T-bracket for the seat, and some 3 inch scissor springs. Much less of a pain in the ass. Literally.

Billet footpegs, another ebay find(dirt cheap). The wife needed my o-ring pegs 'cause she broke one. (she also has a Savage).

Found an old slightly rusty flamin' skull heat shield on ebay for cheap. Rust Reformer Flat black works good.

Stock bars were not comfortable at all being pushed forward, even a little bit, and i wanted something that would match the theme and let me stretch out a little. Handlebars are Jammer 6inch Z-bars.

Rear fender is acually 2 fenders......well....The old one is still under there. What you are seeing is an old 70's Harley fender flipped upside down and slipped over the top of it. Unfortunately, the belt cutout would not let me use the full length. (It looked damn cool too!)  So, staying with the pointy theme, i cut it down to a point..hehe

Yeah, fishtail had to be off a little to allow full movement of the stupid brake lever. Stupid brakes.
Still working on a plate for under the seat. I have polished aluminum plate i am currently cutting/fitting now.

And as of now Spike awaits another evolution....Hmm....

In recent news, Spike has been sold to someone that i think can do great things with her.
Ride on Jack!
